Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)” at the Police School of Słupsk (Poland)

The seminar on “Tactical Combat Casualty Care” (20 to 21 October 2016) for participants from Croatia, Lithuania and Germany was hosted by the Police school of Slupsk, one of the Erasmus partners of our police university. Police trainers from Zagreb, Trakai and the colleagues from our university in Oranienburg, Yvonne Stark and Dirk Wandt (due to the “Erasmus+” programme) were invited to learn more about emergency procedures in response to a shooting incident. This included different aspects of handling the service weapon as well as to obtain professional knowledge on how to render first aid to a shooting victim. All participants received a very warm welcome by the colleagues from the Police School in Slupsk.

Day One of the training focused on the tactical behaviour after being affected by a shooting injury. After an informative talk on the issue, the participants were given the opportunity to conduct practical exercises, e.g. to apply first aid on upper and lower limbs. The aim was to stop the bleeding by the application of a tourniquet. The exercises in the afternoon practiced the handling of the Israeli Bandage to give first aid, which is used after explosions or injuries caused by shots. Many of the practical exercises were conducted on a dummy to have it very close to reality.

Day Two: The obtained knowledge of the previous day in rendering first aid and tactical behavior against attacks with live ammunition had to be used in field exercises. These were different role-play scenarios on tactical shooting behavior, aiming on self-defense as well as measures of self-supply of first aid devices. The evacuation of the injured from the danger zone followed then, something which had to be trained as well. In order to make this as real as possible as well, light and sound effects were brought into action, and artificial fog and different barriers to overcome. All course participants thanked the Police School of Slupsk for the excellent preparation of the seminar.

The gained knowledge of the participants of this seminar as well as the exchange of views and experience with the participants of other police forces can now be transferred to the officers of our police forces. This was made possible by the great opportunities of the “Eramus+” programme that facilitates an exchange of staff members between different countries.
